We believe that the goal of this time of preparation is to aim at leading the candidate toward a more intimate union with Christ and the Holy Spirit, as well as, to awaken a sense of belonging to the church of Jesus Christ…(CCC1309)
ATTENDANCE
In preparation to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, we will look at the importance of Christian community. We will encourage
building strong fellowship within our class. This makes it necessary for everyone to attend and commit to God and one another. Exceptions will be allowed due to illness or family emergency. Being present for each of the sessions is a necessary part of this program. If you will not be able to attend a session, you must contact Lee Ann (842-1810) [email protected] before class begins. If a candidate should miss more than two sessions, he/she will be asked to enter Confirmation Preparation the following year.
Parents and sponsors are encouraged to attend any of the student’s scheduled classes.
Sessions will begin at 9:00AM and end at 10:15AM, unless otherwise noted.
Calendar of Dates
PRAYER
We will begin each session with a prayer service. Each student is asked to take time each day to be with God in prayer. Prayer is our
communication with God. Like any other friendship, communication is vital in our relationship with God. Each candidate will also
have a prayer journal that he/she will use throughout the year.
JOURNAL
Each candidate will receive a journal at the beginning of the process. Many of the assignments (including the research on your saint’s
name) will be done in that journal. Students will also receive a copy of the Catholic Youth Prayer Book which will be used throught the process.
Candidates are encouraged to use the prayer books in their personal prayer life.
SPONSORS
According to Canon Law (3893) sponsors must be;
1.Confirmed Catholics leading a good Christian life
2. 16 years of age or older
3. Someone other than the candidate’s parents
When choosing a sponsor, we suggest someone who is accessible to your, and who you feel comfortable talking with. A
sponsor is someone who will be a mentor for you in your faith growth. CHOOSE YOUR SPONSOR CAREFULLY!! If you are having difficulty choosing a sponsor, please contact Lee Ann. There will be things that you need to do with your sponsors outside of class – you can use phone, social media, or e-mail if they live outside of the area. It is YOUR responsibility to inform your sponsor of the appropriate dates!
RETREAT
The retreat experience will be a day long retreat lead by John, Terry and Lee Ann. The retreat is an important time to get away and
spend time with God. The retreat will be off campus at St. Anthony Spirituality Center, the date is November 4. We will all attend Mass at 10:30
and families are then asked to transport the candidate to St. Anthony (directions are in a link on the home page). We will finish the retreat by 5:30 that evening (lunch is included).
CHRISTIAN SERVICE
Christ said that he came to serve, not to be served. We need to follow his example. True Christian service is meeting the needs of others – friends or enemies. As you begin to develop a mature faith, you need to develop an attitude of serving others. This is an attitude which puts the needs of others before your own wants and needs. You will be asked to participate in and reflect upon a service experience that you will do during this preparation year (through journaling and the like). We will ask you and your parents to commit to serving a meal at Jubilee House. At the session in January we will have available dates.
INTERVIEWS
Terry, John, Fr. Bill Lee Ann will meet with each candidate for a 20min. Interview to answer any questions and help the candidate with his/her
decision about the Sacrament of Confirmation. The interview dates will be in March and April (we will sign-up in March).
Responsibilities
We believe that this is a time for you to grow in your faith as you prepare
for the sacrament. You will be expected to do the
following class learning
experiences:
___ Your Christian Service Reflection (in your journal)
___ An interview in the Spring
___ Weekly attendance at liturgy
___ Activities to be done with sponsors outside of class
